The Designer & Owner
James (Barry) Hartney
Born in Augusta, Georgia, Barry inherited his mother's love of the outdoors and gardening at a very early age and has been "playing in the dirt" for over 50 years. As a teen he ran a neighborhood yard business and then later attended Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College where he pursued a degree in Ornamental Horticulture.
After college, Barry was recruited by The Augusta National Golf Club as an Assistant Nurseryman where he oversaw the greenhouse and nursery operations and the landscaping of both the famed golf course and clubhouse. For many years, Barry also assisted with landscaping operations surrounding The Masters Golf Tournament.
A naturalist at heart, Barry later moved to the Atlanta area to become a partner in a commercial and residential landscape design firm. However, during a trip to Pinehurst for a golf outing he fell in love with the area and decided to sell his share in the business in order to move to the Sandhills. Here, he created PineScapes, Inc. and for nearly 20 years he enjoyed designing, installing and maintaining area landscapes.
Barry has the unique and specialized skill of creating backyard ponds and fountains and so, in 2020 he started ZEN Ponds and Gardens, L.L.C. which allows him to follow his passion and shift his focus towards the design and installation of water features for area homeowners and businesses.
In today's hectic, uncertain and fast paced environment, Barry's ponds and water features help to create a much needed sense of calm and tranquility. Using organic elements - stone, wood, water, plants and fish - his goal is to create a natural, low maintenance "garden" that will provide a soothing place for rest and relaxation right at home.
